Spotlight On - 2014 Honoree - Renay Houle!

lenox hill team

Renay was diagnosed at age 13 with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, long before the availability of the newest medications, the biologic drugs. She was told to get bed rest and started on aspirin and hydroxychloroquine. Throughout her teenage years she tried several other disease modifying-medications, but despite these treatments, Renay continued to have very active disease with many flare-ups. Following her graduation from high school, Renay had a severe flare that made walking very difficult. She needed a wheelchair anytime she left the house.

Renay finally started a treatment that broke her cycle of flares, started extensive physical therapy and had surgery on her left knee, the first surgery of 25. This was 1981. Shortly after, she was told that she would never be able to hold a job because of the severity of her arthritis.

The Walk to Cure Arthritis raises funds and awareness to fight the nation's leading cause of disability. We aren't just helping the millions of people who live with arthritis pain, we're funding research that's getting us closer to a cure.

The event features a three-mile and one-mile course, with arthritis information and activities for the entire family. Pet owners are encouraged to bring their dogs.

Let's raise funds to find a cure for arthritis, then come together to support each other and walk!
